Parasites: Do You Have Parasites or SIBO?

autoimmunity digestion gut health immune support sibo Nov 03, 2026
Microscopic view of worm-like parasites, illustrating intestinal parasite infections and their similarities to SIBO symptoms

Intestinal parasites and SIBO both cause bloating, gas, and bowel changes, though they are different problems. Parasites are organisms picked up from contaminated food, water, soil, animals, or travel, and are evaluated with stool testing or, for pinworm, a tape test. SIBO is an overgrowth of bacteria already present in the small intestine, and is typically evaluated with a practitioner-ordered breath test. Symptoms overlap enough that neither can be confirmed from a symptom list alone.

Bloating, brain fog, and bathroom changes can leave you asking how to tell if you have parasites, or whether this is SIBO instead. I hear that question constantly. Conventional labs often come back “fine,” and you still feel awful. The overlap is real. The exposures, the tests, and the protocols are not.

Here is how I frame every gut protocol: “The gut is the gateway to health.” Then I add, “If your gut is not healthy, neither are you.” Your gut is the foundation of your whole body’s health because 80% of your immune system resides there. Without a healthy gut, you can’t have a healthy immune system.

You cannot confirm either from a symptom list. You can learn the pattern, get the right test, and follow the matching 3-Step Approach.

How to Tell If You Have Parasites

Intestinal parasites are organisms that live in your gut. Common intestinal parasites include protozoa such as Giardia and worms such as pinworms, hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. (1,2,3)

How can you tell if you have intestinal parasites? I look at exposure plus signs. You pick them up from undercooked meat, raw fish, contaminated produce, untreated water, soil, animals, and unwashed hands. (1,2)

Signs of parasites in your body I watch for include:

  • Constipation, diarrhea, gas, or cramps
  • Never feeling satisfied after you eat
  • Iron-deficiency anemia and fatigue (3)
  • Skin irritation
  • Grinding your teeth in your sleep
  • Restless nights (pinworms often cause anal itching at night) (4)
  • Traveler’s diarrhea, or digestion that has not been the same since food poisoning

These signs you have a parasite overlap with many gut infections. They are not a diagnosis. For a fuller map of intestinal parasite symptoms, start there, then test.

How to know if you have parasites in your body with more certainty: work with a practitioner on stool testing. Conventional ova and parasite tests can miss dormant organisms. I used PCR stool testing to look at DNA. Pinworm often needs a tape test around the anus. (4)

I support parasites with Starve, Disrupt and Kill, Restore and Balance. Restore uses Probiotic 100 Billion, then ImmuneIG. That is different from SIBO, where Restore uses a soil-based probiotic.

How SIBO Looks Different

SIBO is an overgrowth of bacteria in your small intestine. Too many bacteria, or the wrong kind, can lead to gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and trouble absorbing nutrients. (5)

SIBO clues I see more often:

  • Bloating after meals
  • Gas, cramps, or odorous stools
  • Distress after carbohydrates
  • A history of food poisoning, frequent antibiotics, or abdominal surgery
  • Slow motility, including with Hashimoto’s

Parasites are usually an outside organism you swallow or pick up through soil or people. SIBO is bacteria already in your gut growing in the wrong place. Testing differs too. Parasites need stool (or a tape test). SIBO is often evaluated with a breath test ordered by a qualified practitioner. (5)

If symptoms are severe, bloody, dehydrating, or paired with fever or unexplained weight loss, seek medical care promptly.

If It Is SIBO: The 3-Step Approach

When SIBO is the issue, I use the 3-Step Approach to Solving SIBO inside The SIBO Solution™ Protocol: Starve, Disrupt and Prune Back, Restore and Balance. I never reverse that order.

  1. Starve the overgrown bacteria. Remove sugar in all of its simple forms, such as candy, desserts, alcohol, and flours. Limit starchy vegetables and fruit. Avoid fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi, and kefir during this phase. Focus on non-starchy vegetables, leafy greens, lean protein, and nourishing fats.
  2. Disrupt and Prune Back. Start with Biofilm Disruptor to support microbial balance by disrupting biofilms. Then prune back the overgrowth with Microb-Clear®. Both are included in the SIBO Support Bundle.
  3. Restore and Balance. Restore with Primal Earth Probiotic, a soil-based option, because most other probiotics contain lactobacillus and SIBO is often an overgrowth of lactobacillus. Then balance with ImmuneIG.

Diet and supplements support microbial balance. They do not replace diagnosis, prescription care, or your practitioner. You are worth getting the right test instead of guessing. Match the infection, then follow the matching sequence.

FAQs

  • How to tell if you have parasites?
I look at exposure plus signs: undercooked meat, raw fish, untreated water, soil, travel, food poisoning, digestive changes, anemia, skin irritation, teeth grinding, and restless nights. (1,2,3,4) Those clues are not a diagnosis. Confirm with a practitioner-ordered stool test (or a tape test for pinworm).
  • How can you tell if you have intestinal parasites instead of SIBO?
Parasites are organisms you pick up from food, water, soil, animals, or people. SIBO is bacteria overgrowing in your small intestine. Parasite clues lean toward travel, food poisoning, anemia, and night itching. SIBO clues lean toward bloating after meals and carbohydrate distress. (2,5) Testing is the only reliable split: stool for parasites, breath testing for SIBO.
  • Are there parasites in my body if I have bloating and brain fog?
Not necessarily. Bloating and brain fog overlap with SIBO, Candida, food reactions, and many other gut issues. Use the pattern and the right test rather than assuming you have worms.
  • What are signs you have a parasite?
Common signs include digestive changes, never feeling full after meals, iron-deficiency anemia, fatigue, skin irritation, grinding your teeth in your sleep, restless nights, and traveler’s diarrhea. (2,3,4) Pinworms often cause anal itching at night. Giardia often causes diarrhea and gas. None of these prove an infection on their own.
  • How do I know if I have parasites in my body for sure?
You do not know from symptoms alone. Work with a qualified practitioner. Conventional ova and parasite stool tests can miss dormant organisms, which is why I used PCR stool testing. Pinworm often needs a tape test. (4) Severe, bloody, or dehydrating symptoms need prompt medical care.
